Smart rings have a problem that watches never had to solve. And it’s not the sensor, not the battery, not the algorithm. It’s the size of your finger.
The 12-Size Reality Most B2B Buyers Overlook
An Apple Watch comes in two sizes. A smart ring comes in twelve. Every additional size means a separate injection mold, a separate PCB variant, a separate battery geometry, and a separate SKU to forecast and warehouse. When a nursing home chain orders 5,000 rings for their residents, the sizing logistics alone can determine whether the project succeeds or fails.
We learned this the hard way. In our first B2B ring deployment—a pilot with a European elderly care provider—we shipped based on self-reported ring sizes. The return rate was 23%. Not because the rings didn’t work, but because fingers aren’t static. They swell in summer, shrink in winter, fluctuate throughout the day, and differ between dominant and non-dominant hands by up to half a size.
The Three Sizing Approaches (And Their Real-World Failure Rates)
Approach 1: Self-Reported Sizing
Ask the end user what ring size they wear. Simple, cheap, and wrong roughly 30% of the time. Most people don’t know their ring size. Those who do are often a size off. For B2B deployments, this approach is a non-starter—the cost of returns and reshipping erases any upfront savings.
Approach 2: Plastic Sizing Kit
Ship a set of 12 plastic ring sizers to each end user before the actual device. The user tries them on, picks the best fit, and reports back. This is the most common approach in consumer retail (Oura uses it, Samsung uses it). In our deployments, the return rate with sizing kits dropped to 8%. Better, but still not great—because plastic sizers don’t have the same weight, thickness, or internal curvature as the actual ring.
Approach 3: On-Site Measurement + Buffer Stock
For institutional deployments—hospitals, nursing homes, corporate wellness programs—we send a trained technician with a professional ring sizer and a buffer stock of all 12 sizes on-site. Each user gets measured in person, and the ring is handed over immediately. Return rate: under 2%. The trade-off is logistics cost, but for deployments above 500 units, the math works out. The cost of on-site measurement is lower than the cost of processing returns and reshipping 8% of units.
The Data: What 12 Sizes Actually Look Like in Production
Across our B2B deployments, we’ve accumulated sizing data from over 15,000 ring shipments. The distribution is not flat:
- High-demand sizes (US 7–9): 52% of total demand. These three sizes alone account for more than half of all rings shipped.
- Mid-range sizes (US 5–6, 10–11): 36% of demand.
- Extreme sizes (US 4, 12–13): 12% of demand. Low volume, but essential—you can’t tell a nursing home that 12% of their residents can’t be monitored.
This distribution has real implications for B2B procurement. If you’re ordering 5,000 rings, you can’t just order 417 of each size. You need a manufacturer that can run flexible production—small batches for extreme sizes, large batches for high-demand sizes—without making the per-unit cost on size 4 four times higher than size 7.
What to Ask Your Ring OEM About Sizing
If you’re evaluating smart ring suppliers for a B2B deployment, sizing is your canary in the coal mine. A manufacturer that can’t answer these five questions clearly is probably not ready for production-scale B2B:
- Do you have 12 distinct injection molds, or do you resize a base design? (Resizing a base design changes internal geometry and can affect sensor contact. Dedicated molds are more expensive to tool but deliver consistent PPG readings across all sizes.)
- What’s your minimum order quantity per size? (If they require 500 MOQ per size, you’re locked into 6,000 minimum for a full size run. Flexible manufacturers can do 100 per size.)
- Do you offer a sizing kit program? (Plastic sizers branded with your logo, packaged with instructions in your target language, shipped to end users before the device.)
- What’s your historical return rate due to sizing? (If they can’t give you a number, they haven’t shipped enough rings to know.)
- Can you support on-site measurement for deployments above 500 units? (This is a logistics capability, not a manufacturing one. The right OEM partner handles both.)
